Residential Projects
Urban Farm |
The Urban Farm project was an idea of taking an existing 1970's ranch-style home in Haiku Plantation and converting it into an expanded villa using industrial and affordable materials. This project is a lesson in taking the everyday and making it into something special. Something recurring in many of the projects you will see here.
In the pictures below, you can see the simple shed roof is the existing home. A bridge to a semi-quanset-hut shape backed with some large massive pillars help create the transition from home to pool. The language of the semi-circle as introduced in both plan and section (something always recommended by the best of designers) so that it is apparent in multiple aspects of the experience of the home. |
Custom kitchens, millwork, and furniture
|
There are various projects that tested creativity on a small scale as we developed ideas for special and much needed improvement. Here's a sampling: The red kitchen: A mix of old and new as we took pearlescent red laminate and set it as a backdrop to an existing boomerang shaped stainless steel sink and counter top. We outfitted the kitchen with a retro-50's look by up-playing the aluminum banded tops by adding a banded layer of corrugated sheet metal laminate, and large scale industrial metal siding at the back panel of the bar-style counter. The GomaCrate: This doggie crate was designed while with 87ZERO for a client who purchased a custom set of furniture. She did not want her pup to be left out, so we created the GomaCrate. A dog crate that says "no!" to plastic, and hello to fine furniture design. She loved it so much that her dog, Goma, has a crate upstairs and another downstairs. Read more about the GomaCrate here! The 87ZERO MK-One micro-kitchen: Forseeing the coming micro-units to our way of life, we went ahead and worked on designing an entire kitchen in the dimension of 7'-6" high, and 7'-6" wide. The cool feature is the pull out base cabinet that is on wheels, and the sides fold out so that it can be used as a table. This got lots of attention from both the media and the trade-show circuit. If there's one thing we are not... it's conventional. Kudo's to Sanford Hasegawa, Janet Liu, and Heejin Uchimura for their awesome work! The Star Wars shower: This shower was built for teens with the option for conversion in the future. It's built with an industrial look, and the parts and pieces making up this shower are very - and I mean VERY inexpensive. We took the idea of industrial-chic and put it to use with uni-strut (typically erector-set style steel used to hang air conditioners) and mixed it with some 2x6's for shelves that also double as the structural members. We attached corrugated plastic roofing with stainless steel neoprene washer anchors to create a water-proof seal. The shower pan is a simple solid surface pan ala- Naka's Marble (who excels at this), and the LED lighting is a hookup right out of Amazon. The fixture is also a KES fixture - one piece and SUPER affordable. And it works like a charm! The teens love it! And the adults even more! Kudo's to Vern Wagner, contractor who put this all together - and it was his idea to put in the LED's! It was a contractor's challenge as it used materials in very UNCONVENTIONAL ways. But it's waterproofed and works phenomenally. Thanks Vern! |
A renovation from back East in Manoa
This home was a single-walled 1960's home that needed extra space and room for a Doctor and his family of 4. The carport was torn down, and in it's place a new covered garage fronting an outdoor kitchen and lounge - topped off with a 2nd floor master bedroom suite! Sweet it is! - as the renovation brought a whole new dimension to the place... But not only did we improve the massing, but we changed the siding on the whole house. The owner hails from the east coast, so we brought back some of the arts and crafts Manoa charm back to Manoa. What an improvement!

Manoa Modern
This project is still in permitting, but should be a really amazing experience in space and light. It has a double high living room with a koi pond and the most interesting skylight that is so much fun!
UPDATE: Manoa Modern is getting an update...it's going ULTRA modern. Stay tuned as we go from this to a double cube! |
